Little Nemo in Aotearoa, a workshop in collective comic translation, 1 of 4
November 17 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm NZDT
Translation is said to be the oldest trade in the world. And like any trade, it is learnt through practice. Over the course of four sessions, we will work on different episodes from one of the earliest comics in history, Little Nemo in Slumberland (1905), and collectively explore some strategies for overcoming the challenges posed by its translation, from the original in English into your mother tongue.
The exercises will be carried out in teams of two or three people who (ideally) speak the same communalect*. Invite your friends, the kids around you and your grandparents! Limited places. Free workshop.
(*A communalect is the language variety spoken within a specific community. Think of it as those inside jokes that make your auntie burst out laughing, but will leave her friend from another town a little confused.)
All languages are welcome, no translating experience required. The only must are being a fluent speaker, basic writing skills and a willingness to enjoy and know your language better. Ages 10 and up.
